Novels in Between Classes is an experimental paper-based media project for primary school students, designed as a humorous response to the restrictions placed on extracurricular reading in schools. The project is inspired by the common ‘error machine’ used by primary school students, and through this medium, Tagore's essay ‘The School of Flowers’ from a language textbook is recreated as a playful graphic novel. Combining ASCII art and emoticons, the work gives new life to a traditional text in a light-hearted and humorous way. Although the cultural context of ASCII art was not explored, this visual tool made the content more lively and interesting. The project not only creates an opportunity for students to freely explore literature, but also symbolises a witty and functional response to authority, opening up new paths to the possibilities of reading and design.
